From crossing the salt lake “Chott el Jerid” …

On one axis from east to west, it is crossed about 80 km by a road built on a dike that connects Tozeur to Kebili.
According to seasons a body of surface water covers the area of Chott el Jerid. In summer, owing to the intense evaporation, the body water is replaced by a salt film. Salt harvesting is carried out for industrial purposes. A photo stop allows appreciate these changing landscapes and salty pastures on the edge of depression, which are the domain of half-savage camels.
Crossing the oasis Blidet and Nouail allows the discovery of these immense palm groves dedicated to the farming of dates. Most of the culture in the region of Jerid is farmed on the variety Deglet Nour. Its Arabic name means “date of light”. This quality suitable for export is often considered the best date.
In Zaafrane you discover the first white sand dunes of the Great Oriental Erg. You continue your way to visit the fort of Sabria. This former French fort served as backdrops for filming some scenes of the film “Fort Saganne” with Gerard Depardieu in the lead role.
After this visit and a walk in the dunes, you go towards El Faouar for lunch at a local restaurant.

… to Douz, the “gate of the desert”.

In early afternoon you follow the road that leads you to Douz. This small town in southern Tunisia known as the “gateway to the desert” was, until recently, an important stop for caravans traveling between the Sahara and northern Tunisia. She is currently a destination of many tourists visiting the dunes of the Great Oriental Erg and the starting point of many raids by 4×4 or motorcycles. Douz is also known by its International Festival of the Sahara, which, every year end, brings together representatives of various nomadic tribes of several countries bordering this vast desert.
In Kebili area, you visit an artesian well of hot water and its water cooling system. Indeed, to be used in the irrigation of the palm groves, the water flowing at about 70 ° C must be cooled by a long journey before reaching room temperature.
Before the return crossing of “Chott el Jerid”, you visit a petrified dunes site dubbed the “Roots of the dunes.”
By late afternoon, the 4×4 bring you back to your hotel.
