Great Mosque in Kairouan and amphi theater in El Jem!

From Arabic architecture of the early days in Kairouan…

Kairouan was founded in 670 by the Muslim Arabs in their conquest of North Africa. To go out there, we make a start on 07h30 from your hotel in Hammamet or Tunis.
Kairouan is classified as Unesco World Heritage since 1988. The Great Mosque remains the emblem of the city and continues to attract the faithful in the oldest place of pilgrimage in the country. It is the oldest Islamic monument in Tunisia and the Maghreb.
The Mosque of the Three Doors must be considered, to its decorative facade, one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture.
The zaouia or mausoleum Sidi Sahbi, is usually called Barber Mosque. The population venerated a local saint, Mahomet’s companion. According to legend, he would have kept three hairs from the beard of the Prophet, hence the name given to the building.
The walk in the old medina will lead you to the discovery of crafts which also contributed to the fame of the city, because the city is also famous for its handmade woolen carpets as Zarbia or alloucha, a type of knotted hand carpets , and for its pastries whose makrouds.
Your city tour will continue through the Aghlabid basins, large open-air tanks, constructed to collect water from the river Merguellil and supply the town with water.

Lunch in Kairouan, in a hotel.

…at the height of Roman architecture in North Africa, in El Jem

The amphitheater of El Jem is, by its size, the third largest of the Roman Empire, after Rome’s Colosseum and the one of Capua in southern Italy. He could accommodate between 27,000 and 30,000 spectators.
The amphitheater is a vast building arranged around an elliptical arena. The bleachers set around the arena to allow a large audience to watch gladiator fights or hunts wild animals (animals against animals or men against animals).
After visiting the amphitheater towards the archaeological museum which show many mosaics discovered during excavations in the Roman villas of Thysdrus, ancient city on which ruins of, El Jem was founded.
Nearby, the Villa Africa is a reconstruction of a Roman house, probably a domus (urban residential, luxurious residence of the affluent) discovered by chance during an attempted illegal construction.
Return to your hotel is done for dinner time.
