From Djerba island to the Saharan oasis of Ksar Ghilane…
Early departure from Djerba by the «Roman road» that connects the island to the mainland. Photo-stop to the salt lake called chott «Sebkhet el Melah». Road across the countryside of southern Tunisia to Tataouine. On request: a break for gourmand weakness to a pastry of «gazelle horns», specialty of the area of Tataouine. Then another light turns on, these arid lands, thanks to a tour in the « Memory of the Earth Museum», (subject to opening), illustrating the rich presence of dinosaurs in the region, in the tertiary era.
On the way, we stop to Ksar Ouled Soltane, for a visit to this set of fortified granaries dating from the fifteenth century, unique in its kind, before continuing to a second ksar perched on a rocky peak. Finally we reach Chenini for lunch in a cave restaurant and visit this Berber village, clinging to the mountainside.
In the afternoon, head south, the landscape is gradually changing and you cross the reg (stony desert), warning of the dunes of the Sahara. Arrival in late afternoon near the Saharan oasis of Ksar Ghilane. After watching the sunset over the dunes, transfer, by following the track, to installation, dinner and overnight in a Bedouin tent, in a comfortable camp in the desert.
…From Ksar Ghilane oasis to the troglodytes in Matmata, back to Djerba
After breakfast at the camp, crossing by 4X4 to reach the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. Free time for a camel ride or quad ride (optional extra activities) that will allow you to discover the Roman fort of Tisavar. It remains a testament to the role of the oasis as checkpoint in the desert, since the Roman era. Discovery of the spring hot water in the oasis with free access, for a swim with termal virtues. By late morning, departure from Ksar Ghilane and stop at Leclerc monument column overlooking the village and oasis.
On the way back to Djerba, crossing the Berber village of Tamezret, and its landscapes carved by water erosion. Lunch in a 3* hotel in Matmata. Visit a cave dwelling in Matmata, this unusual place that inspired the director of the Star Wars saga. Back to the island of Djerba by the ferry, that makes the sea link for residents, between the cliffs of Jorf and the small fishing port of Ajim.
